Dr Damian Wilde

BSc (Hons), PGCE, PGCert, D.Clin.Psych.
HCPC Registered.

Damian is an experienced clinical psychologist having worked in the NHS and private practice since 2006.
After completing a psychology degree at the University of Derby, Damian undertook a PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University and qualified as a primary school teacher. Damian taught in the Merseyside area and helped develop numerous children, not just educationally, but also from a pastoral perspective.
Having a keen interest in clinical psychology, Damian then gained further practical experience in a children’s home, helping to support children’s emotional and life needs. Damian then started working for the NHS as an Assistant Clinical Psychologist, firstly for a learning disability service in Colchester and then for a CAMHS team in West Yorkshire. During these posts, Damian developed assessment and intervention skills, as well as helping to deliver service improvement via research projects.
Damian then undertook further postgraduate studies at The University of York whilst working for the NHS in West Yorkshire, completing a postgraduate certificate in psychological therapies. Damian studied alongside working as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, providing assessments and short-term psychological interventions.
Damian then completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at Coventry & Warwick Universities, whilst also working for a local NHS trust as a Clinical Psychologist (In Training). Damian rotated to different specialities every six months, which included elective placements in specialist neuropsychology (working on a major head trauma ward and in neuro rehabilitation) and psychodynamic psychotherapy, which is his current specialism. For his doctoral research, Damian investigated mediating factors involved with childhood perfectionism.
Post doctorate, Damian has completed research, worked for CAMHS, developed a psychotherapy part of a psychological therapies service and worked in adult mental health, all within the NHS. Damian currently provides MDT working, specialist assessments, consultancy, psychotherapy, supervision, and teaching, working in a senior NHS position.
Damian’s current specialism within clinical psychology is psychodynamic psychotherapy, which can be effective in bringing about significant and positive life changes. This was well displayed in 2016, when Damian won the ‘Inspirational Professional’ award at The Youth Mental Health Awards, for (in the young person’s own words), ‘helping to change, if not save my life’. So, psychotherapy can change lives.
Damian also helps to supervise and develop assistant and trainee clinical psychologists as well as mentoring psychology students. Damian also likes to discuss topical issues within mental health, see: In conversation with Dr Damian Wilde - YouTube and Where is the space? (thecounsellorscafe.co.uk)
